Plumb Line in a dream

Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa

Also: Plumbline, Plumb line, Measuring line, Measuring rod

What it means

A standard being set, or a standard already set.

A measure applied to something, or a limit that has been fixed.

The plumb line tests whether what has been built is upright. It does not build — it reveals.

✦ When it is positive

  • A standard set in the dreamer's favour by someone prominent, representing God setting the standard
  • The dreamer setting a standard, or recognising the need to set one

⚠ When it is a warning

  • God concluding judgment over something that has been measured and found crooked

How to tell the difference

If the plumb line is set by a professional, a builder, or a prominent figure, this represents God setting the standard. If the dreamer holds it, the dream concerns a standard they are responsible for. Note what is being measured — a wall, a house, a person — as that identifies what is under assessment.

Scripture

7Thus he showed me: behold, the Lord stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8The LORD said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I will set a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I will not again pass by them any more.

Amos 7:7-8 (WEB)

I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plumb line of Ahab’s house; and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.

2 Kings 21:13 (WEB)

I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line. The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place.

Isaiah 28:17 (WEB)
