Amadlozi (ancestors): meaning in the Bible and in dreams

Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa

Also: Ancestor, Amadlozi, Badimo, Izinyanya

What are amadlozi?

Amadlozi (isiZulu), izinyanya (isiXhosa) and badimo (Sesotho/Setswana) are the words for the ancestors: deceased family members believed to watch over, protect and guide the living.

In the Bible, when people die they do not remain on earth interacting with the living (Hebrews 9:27), and God forbids consulting the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). What presents itself as the ancestors is understood to be familiar spirits that seek to bind people to generational covenants. For those in Christ these are false covenants, already broken by the blood of Jesus: a family history does not decide a believer’s future.

In a dream, ancestors are weighed in the light of Scripture, not tradition. The full meaning follows below.
