Familiar Spirits in a dream

Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa

Also: Familiar spirit, Demonic masquerader, Deceptive entity, Princes over a family, Spirit impersonating the dead

What it means

An unseen demonic power masquerading as a deceased relative in order to bring deception, spiritual bondage or generational limitation.

According to Scripture the dead know nothing of the living world, and God does not send the dead to minister to the living — He sends His Holy Spirit or His angels. Any deceased relative appearing in a dream to speak, give instructions, offer food or demand rituals is therefore a familiar spirit attempting to trick the dreamer.

GENERATIONAL CONSTRAINTS AND PATTERNS: a spirit monitoring a family line to enforce recurring ancestral issues such as stagnancy, poverty, marital delay or premature death.

ATTACHMENT TO THE PAST AND UNRESOLVED GRIEF: embracing a dead or obsolete way of thinking, old doctrines, or unhealthy emotional ties.

COUNTERFEIT GUIDANCE: a deceptive entity attempting to blur spiritual insight, mimic divine authority, and distract the dreamer from trusting solely in the Lord Jesus.

✦ When it is positive

  • REJECTION OF THE OFFER: overpowering, refusing or casting out the familiar spirit in the dream signifies spiritual victory, overcoming generational patterns, and breaking free from demonic oppression
  • REFUSING FOOD OR GIFTS: refusing to eat food or accept items given by a deceased relative means the dreamer has conquered an evil plot, thwarted a demonic trap, and maintained spiritual purity
  • GAINING REVELATION: recognising the entity as a counterfeit exposes hidden attacks in the family line, enabling strategic prayer and the claiming of victory

⚠ When it is a warning

  • ACCEPTING FOOD OR GIFTS: eating food given by a deceased relative, receiving items from them, or agreeing with them represents being tricked into a demonic agreement that introduces sickness, spiritual stagnation or financial lack
  • INTIMACY OR PHYSICAL CONTACT: hugging, kissing, holding hands or engaging in sexual acts with a deceased person signifies deep demonic entanglement, spiritual oppression, or a spirit of death operating against the dreamer's life and marriage
  • FOLLOWING OR OBEYING INSTRUCTIONS: following a deceased person, listening to their directives, or returning to an old ancestral home indicates regression into the past, spiritual blindness, or submission to generational bondage

How to tell the difference

A FAMILIAR SPIRIT NEVER REPRESENTS A DIVINE BLESSING OR A TRUE ANCESTOR IN A POSITIVE LIGHT — the dream is positive only where the dreamer overcomes or rejects the entity. THE ROLE OF CONTEXT: always evaluate the atmosphere and the outcome. Waking fearful, heavy, anxious or troubled marks the dream as an attack or warning requiring prayer. GRIEF VERSUS A FAMILIAR SPIRIT ENCOUNTER — FOUR TESTS. (1) SOURCE: a grief-driven dream originates in the dreamer's own soul — unhealed emotional wounds, longing, memory, and the normal processing of loss. A familiar spirit encounter is an external attack originating from a demonic entity masquerading as the deceased in order to gain an occasion of entry or to inflict bondage. (2) EMOTIONAL ATMOSPHERE AND FRUIT: a dream rooted purely in grief leaves the dreamer processing emotion, missing the person, or quietly sad, but it does NOT carry an oppressive, tormenting or coercive spiritual weight. A familiar spirit encounter carries a heavy, oppressive, manipulative or terrifying atmosphere, often with pressure to comply, fear, or a sense of spiritual pollution on waking. (3) CONTENT AND INTERACTION: in grief dreams the interactions are usually passive reflections of memory — seeing the person sitting in their usual chair, or walking through past scenes — with no authoritative spiritual transaction. A familiar spirit encounter involves proactive, deceptive action: the entity gives specific instructions, demands adherence to old family rituals, offers food to eat, or attempts physical intimacy in order to establish a spiritual link. (4) VULNERABILITY WINDOW: grief itself can become an open door if left unsubmitted to God. Familiar spirits specifically target the window of mourning to exploit emotional vulnerability, twisting the memory of a loved one into a channel for deception and generational limitation. DO NOT PRONOUNCE A FAMILIAR SPIRIT OVER A DREAM THAT IS PASSIVE, TENDER AND SORROWFUL — that is grief, and the counsel is comfort and prayer, not warfare. HOW TO RESPOND: because the great majority of dreams are spiritual, do not enter into fear. On waking, speak with authority ONCE in the Name of Jesus to cancel the evil assignment, renounce any agreement, and command the spirit to flee. For those in Christ, such spirits cannot establish a covenant, because Christ's covenant already secures the believer. They may only seek a spiritual influence, deceptive agreement or foothold through temptation, deception or unrepented sin. With one who is not in Christ they can and do establish covenants.

Scripture

“‘Don’t turn to those who are mediums, nor to the wizards. Don’t seek them out, to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 19:31 (WEB)

“‘The person that turns to those who are mediums and wizards, to play the prostitute after them, I will even set my face against that person, and will cut him off from among his people.

Leviticus 20:6 (WEB)

10There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who tells fortunes, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, 11or a charmer, or someone who consults with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 (WEB)

5For the living know that they will die, but the dead don’t know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten. 6Also their love, their hatred, and their envy has perished long ago; neither do they any longer have a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 (WEB)

When they tell you, “Consult with those who have familiar spirits and with the wizards, who chirp and who mutter,” shouldn’t a people consult with their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Isaiah 8:19 (WEB)
