Counting in a dream
Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa
Also: Numbering, Census, Tallying, Personal inventory, Counting the cost
What it means
Divine assessment and sovereign accounting of people, nations, deeds or time — and the deliberate human evaluation of one's own spiritual state, resources and commitments.
Measuring accountability, recording faithfulness, taking stewardship inventory, calculating the requirements of discipleship, or establishing order.
Which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first and counteth the cost? Counting before beginning is commanded; counting to admire one's own strength is not.
✦ When it is positive
- God numbering His people for protection and care
- Names recorded in the Book of Life
- Numbering our days to gain a heart of wisdom
- Believers soberly counting the cost of following Christ
⚠ When it is a warning
- Prideful self-reliance through human census, as with David numbering Israel and trusting military might
- Relying on mortal metrics rather than spiritual truth
- Failing to count the cost, leading to unfinished commitment
How to tell the difference
A human census conducted out of pride brings judgment, whereas God's own counting signifies intimate knowledge — the very hairs of the head are numbered. Human counting IS commanded when evaluating discipleship. Note WHO counts and WHAT is being counted.
Scripture
1Again the LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, “Go, count Israel and Judah.” 2The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the sum of the people.” 3Joab said to the king, “Now may the LORD your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?” 4Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

Luke 12:7 (WEB)
28For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and count the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? 29Or perhaps, when he has laid a foundation and isn’t able to finish, everyone who sees begins to mock him, 30saying, ‘This man began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ 31Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
