What it means

Spiritual emptiness, lifelessness, and human self-reliance.

Resistance to the Holy Spirit; stubbornness toward God's move.

They have forsaken the fountain of living waters and hewed out cisterns that hold no water. Stagnancy in Scripture follows the choice of a self-made supply over a living one.

Inability to respond to the Spirit's flow

A supply that has stopped moving

How to tell the difference

Dirty stagnant water represents what is demonic, or a believer's heart that is wicked or living unrepentant. Note whether anything is living in the water. In Ezekiel the miry places and marshes were NOT healed but given to salt, which distinguishes them from waters that the river reaches.
