Spiritual Spouse in a dream
Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa
Also: Spirit husband, Spirit wife, Spiritual husband, Spiritual wife, Dream husband, Dream wife, Dream lover, Night visitor, Dream spouse, Unknown husband, Unknown wife, Faceless partner, Man who felt like a spouse, Woman who felt like a spouse
What it means
A familiar spirit that has taken the position of a spouse or intimate partner in the dreamer's life, establishing a covenant through dream intimacy where the person is not in Christ, and a spiritual influence or deceptive agreement where they are, in order to oppress them continuously.
A spiritual spouse may appear as a known or unknown person who functions as the dreamer's husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, or intimate partner within the dream. The relationship is treated as though it already exists, often involving shared beds, cuddling, possessiveness, emotional attachment, control, or being led around.
The dream frequently includes signs of bondage, loss of identity, shame (such as nakedness), exclusion from one's rightful place, delayed purpose, or domination over the dreamer's decisions.
Spirits in dreams establish covenants with those outside Christ, and spiritual influence or deceptive agreement with believers, so that they can continuously oppress — 'Can two walk together, except they be agreed?' (Amos 3:3). Sex in the dream is the agreement.
According to Apostle Mbanjwa, this spirit will cause things to die in a person's life — finances, relationships, and many other things — and steals away blessings meant to come their way. Some carry this burden into marriage: relationships and marriages under this attack crumble, and many are prone never to enjoy marital intimacy because of the oppression.
⚠ When it is a warning
- Sexual intercourse in the dream with an involuntary climax after waking — the strongest confirming indicator
- Persistent spousal behaviour (shared bed, cuddling, possessiveness, emotional attachment) combined with the accompanying symbols
- A deceased spouse, ex-partner, or dead person appearing as an intimate partner — a familiar spirit mimicking the deceased
- Bondage, loss of identity, shame or nakedness, exclusion from one's rightful place, delayed purpose, domination over the dreamer's decisions
- Being driven, led around, or abandoned by the partner-figure; counterfeit provision or covering
How to tell the difference
IDENTIFICATION: the relationship is treated as though it ALREADY EXISTS — that is the defining test. Sexual intercourse with an involuntary climax after waking is the strongest confirming indicator, but persistent spousal behaviour combined with the accompanying symbols may also identify a spiritual spouse. DELIVERANCE: such dreams require a prayer of deliverance — the same prayer as the one for familiar spirits: on waking, command the spirit ONCE, by name, in Jesus' Name (e.g. 'You familiar spirit revealed in my dream, I command you to immediately stop with your plots, maneuvers, and operations against my life and my family's, in Jesus' Name'). Command only once — commanding twice steps outside faith into unbelief. The author also counsels healing any unresolved grief, dealing with what feeds the lusts of the flesh in the thought pattern, seeking pastoral counsel (a pastor for a man; a woman leader or pastor's wife for a woman), and daily Scripture study and confession. The devil has no power or access over a life except it is given him. IMPORTANT DISTINCTION: a dream revealing sex or unfaithfulness in a POSITIVE or peaceful context is NOT a spiritual spouse — it is a warning dream about the dreamer's compromised faithfulness to the Lord (something idolized in God's place). Do not pronounce a spiritual spouse over such a dream.
