Leaven in a dream

Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa

Also: Yeast, Old leaven, Leavened bread

What it means

Sin, and the nature of fallen man.

Pride and puffing up — a little leaven leavens the whole lump.

Leaven works invisibly and spreads through everything it touches, which is why it pictures corruption that is not noticed until it has affected the whole.

✦ When it is positive

  • Leaven as the Kingdom of Heaven hidden in three measures of meal, representing quiet and pervasive Kingdom growth

⚠ When it is a warning

  • Sin and corruption spreading unnoticed
  • The fallen nature
  • The doctrine or hypocrisy of religious leaders

How to tell the difference

Leaven is almost always negative in Scripture, with one clear exception in the parable of the Kingdom. Read it positively only where the dream's tone and the object being leavened plainly point to growth rather than corruption. Note WHOSE leaven it is — Christ named the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod specifically.

Scripture

They shall eat the meat in that night, roasted with fire, with unleavened bread. They shall eat it with bitter herbs.

Exodus 12:8 (WEB)

He spoke another parable to them. “The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, until it was all leavened.”

Matthew 13:33 (WEB)

6Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7They reasoned among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8Jesus, perceiving it, said, “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, because you have brought no bread? 9Don’t you yet perceive or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up,

Matthew 16:6-12 (WEB)

6Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole lump? 7Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. 8Therefore let’s keep the feast, not with old yeast, neither with the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:6-8 (WEB)

A little yeast grows through the whole lump.

Galatians 5:9 (WEB)
