Sweeping in a dream
Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa
Also: Brushing, Clearing away, Sweeping the house, Cleaning the floor
What it means
Clearing away dust, debris or unwanted elements from a surface — thorough cleansing, the exposure of hidden dirt, or sweeping judgment.
Thorough investigation; the removal of sin or defilement; spiritual housekeeping.
In the allegory of the House of the Interpreter the heart is a dusty, uncleaned house. The Law stirs up the dust, revealing the hidden corruption of the heart rather than cleansing it; the Gospel brings the grace that truly washes the inner man.
✦ When it is positive
- Conviction and cleansing of the heart through the Word and the Spirit
- The woman sweeping the house until the lost coin is found
⚠ When it is a warning
- The swept and empty house to which the unclean spirit returns with seven others worse than itself — moral reformation without divine regeneration
How to tell the difference
SWEEPING ALONE IS INSUFFICIENT AND DANGEROUS if the heart is left vacant. Outward behavioural reform without the filling of the Holy Spirit leaves the house swept, garnished and empty. Note whether anything fills the house afterwards.
Scripture
43“When an unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he passes through waterless places seeking rest, and doesn’t find it. 44Then he says, ‘I will return into my house from which I came;’ and when he has come back, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45Then he goes and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Even so will it be also to this evil generation.”
Matthew 12:43-45 (WEB)
“Or what woman, if she had ten drachma coins, if she lost one drachma coin, wouldn’t light a lamp, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she found it?
