Ukuphahla: meaning in the Bible and in dreams
Biblical meaning from Hearing God's Voice in Dreams by Apostle Nicholas V. Mbanjwa
Also: Ancestral invocation, Reporting to the ancestors, Clapping and calling clan names
What is ukuphahla?
Ukuphahla is the ritual of communicating with, invoking or reporting to the ancestors (amadlozi or amathonga). It typically involves clapping hands, stating clan names, burning impepho, and sometimes offering snuff, traditional beer or water.
In the Bible, communicating with familiar spirits and the dead is forbidden by God (Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:10-12). The practice is a transaction: access and information are sought, and something is offered in return.
In a dream, seeing yourself perform ukuphahla is a manipulation tactic of familiar spirits, meant to condemn you. But there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). The full meaning follows below.
What it means in a dream
A ritual of communicating with, invoking, or reporting to the ancestors (amadlozi or amathonga). It typically involves clapping hands, stating clan names, burning impepho as a signal, and sometimes offering snuff, traditional beer or water to bridge the gap between the living and the spiritual realm.
Communicating with familiar spirits; divining.
The practice is a transaction: access and information are sought, and something is offered in return.
⚠ When it is a warning
- Idolatry
- Speaking to familiar spirits disguised as ancestors
- A spiritual trade — offering invitation to spirits in return for information through mediums or dreams, protection, prosperity or blessing
How to tell the difference
DREAMING OF ONESELF PERFORMING UKUPHAHLA is a manipulation tactic of familiar spirits, intended to deceive the dreamer and to condemn them concerning their walk with the Lord — and through that condemnation to open a door to attack. On waking, the dreamer should renounce it. For those in Christ, such spirits cannot establish a covenant, because Christ's covenant already secures the believer. They may only seek a spiritual influence, deceptive agreement or foothold through temptation, deception or unrepented sin, which may provide an occasion for oppression, though never for overturning Christ's covenant.
Scripture
“‘Don’t turn to those who are mediums, nor to the wizards. Don’t seek them out, to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus 19:31 (WEB)
10There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who tells fortunes, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, 11or a charmer, or someone who consults with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. Because of these abominations, the LORD your God drives them out from before you.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12 (WEB)
“Therefore the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against your magic bands, with which you hunt the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them from your arms. I will let the souls fly free, even the souls whom you ensnare like birds.
Ezekiel 13:20 (WEB)
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1 (WEB)
