What is a sangoma?
A sangoma (isiZulu isangoma, plural izangoma) is a traditional healer and diviner who claims to receive guidance from the ancestors. An inyanga is a traditional herbalist; the two words are often used together.
In the Bible, divination and consulting the dead are forbidden by God (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). A sangoma’s accurate words come from a spirit of divination, like the slave girl in Acts 16:16-18.
In a dream, a sangoma represents a divining spirit attempting to establish a connection with you. The scenarios, and how to cancel such a dream, follow below.
What it means in a dream
A divining spirit attempting to establish a link or connection with you. The ultimate goal of this spiritual advance is often to gain access to your life and influence your God-given destiny.
Shaking hands, walking, hugging or talking with a Sangoma: these actions signify an open door or a spiritual handshake. A divining spirit is trying to forge a connection with you spiritually.
A deceased family member appearing as a Sangoma: a generational or ancestral divining spirit from your family line attempting to latch onto your life. Consulting the dead is forbidden by God (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
A deceased person who was a Sangoma in life: the divining spirit that formerly used that individual is now seeking you out as a new host. This search is typically triggered by a recognition of your latent prophetic or healing gift.
A Sangoma prophesying over you: a divining spirit creating a spiritual connection with you, provided you receive the prophecy in the dream. This is a false prophecy, even though in the dream it was accurate and spoke of things happening in your life. The Bible calls false the source of the information, not necessarily the information itself, even though the information is true (Acts 16:16-18).
Actions that establish a connection: in the dream realm, certain actions serve as forms of agreement or consent. Talking back, kissing, hugging, walking side by side, or eating food together (especially finishing the food) with a Sangoma or spiritual entity establishes a minor spiritual connection. These actions do not constitute a full covenant, but they grant the spirit a slight advantage or legal foothold over your destiny. If you experience them, wake up immediately and spiritually cancel the dream and its claims over your life.
Recognising manipulation: once this minor connection is made, the spirit may attempt to dictate your affairs by creating obstacles, closing doors and bringing misfortune. This is often a tactic to make it appear as though you have an “ancestral calling” that is blocking your progress, pressuring you to submit to its demands out of frustration.
How to cancel such a dream (command, do not pray): “You spirit that appeared in my dream as (so-and-so / this and that), I command you to immediately desist and cease your manoeuvres against my life and destiny. I sever the connection you made with me in my dream (describe the action). I do not agree to your advances, in Jesus’ Name.”
⚠ When it is a warning
- A divining spirit seeking a connection with you
- An ancestral divining spirit from the family line
- A spirit seeking a new host because of your prophetic or healing gift
- A false prophecy, even when it is accurate
- A prophetic counterfeit
How to tell the difference
Dreams vs. actual covenants: a binding covenant with divining spirits is never sealed purely through dreams. Dreams act as pathways or recruitment tools, a mechanism to gain access, wear down your resistance and lead the dreamer toward a real-life covenant through ukuthwasa (initiation). Before entering full initiation, an individual must undergo imvuma kufa, which means consenting to death: a profound spiritual agreement in which one surrenders their individual will, identity and life to the control of those spirits. Dreams are simply the psychological and spiritual entry point designed to coax the dreamer down that path.
Scripture
16As we were going to prayer, a certain girl having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by fortune telling. 17Following Paul and us, she cried out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us a way of salvation!” 18She was doing this for many days. But Paul, becoming greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” It came out that very hour.
Acts 16:16-18 (WEB)
10There shall not be found with you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who tells fortunes, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, 11or a charmer, or someone who consults with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. Because of these abominations, the LORD your God drives them out from before you.
