What it means

A traditional cleansing ritual, commonly performed with water infused with herbs (imithi), sea water, or animal ash.

It is typically done to clear bad luck (isinyama) or misfortune; to cleanse a person after a difficult event such as a death in the family, a funeral or a miscarriage; or to pacify or connect with the ancestors (amadlozi) after dreams, illness or a spiritual calling.

How to tell the difference

DREAMING OF THIS represents a deception aimed at the dreamer by a familiar spirit, seeking to convince them that what they are going through cannot be solved by God and that traditional means are required. The dreamer should stand their ground and rebuke this spirit directly. For those in Christ, such spirits cannot establish a covenant, because Christ's covenant already secures the believer. They may only seek a spiritual influence, deceptive agreement or foothold through temptation, deception or unrepented sin, which may provide an occasion for oppression, though never for overturning Christ's covenant.
